My name is Jessa and I am a Chicago based maker of things.
In college I began making lamps out of reclaimed materials, and have recently
found the motivation and willpower to continue with that work. I am drawn to
bike parts for creative, symbolic, and pragmatic reasons. I love the aesthetics
and physical properties of bike chains (except for the grease) and the process
of exploring what forms they can create. When I look at a pile of bike hardware
I see potential creatures waiting to be formed. Sometimes when I am at my work bench
all I can see is a bunch of dismembered robot eyes staring up at me, kind of
creepy I know.
The bike is also a symbol of sustainable and local living, a
principle I support and am trying to get better at following. Luckily for me Chicago is a biker town, so there are plenty of parts for me to scavenge. Smart
Bikes Parts in Logan Square is my number one supplier, they even put my name on
their recycle bucket! I am one lucky gal. People often ask if I use other kinds
of materials, and I have in the past, but for now the bike parts are serving me
well and provide a welcome bit of structure to my ADD process of art making.
Thank you for reading and I hope to see you back here soon!
